A diptych of ceramic reliefs to form an inherent communication between objects, formed through both suggestions of chronological and successional composition, and in implied separational dialogue. 

The flat relief resists structural movement, with none implied by the objectuality of the slab itself, leaving the viewer to find any implied dynamism through interpretive response to the carved image alone. In contrast, the bowed relief introduces a spatially persuaded dynamism. The curved nature of the slab implies a pulling away from the surface and, subjectively, the flat panel, as if in temporal or narrative progression.

Though both works depict the same three figures, subtle compositional shifts differentiate them. The flat panel exists as a resolved, successfully complete relief, with a precise carving and a tonally successful surface. The curved relief, however, remains intentionally incomplete. Its image is ‘unfinished’, with edges unrefined and sections uncarved. Its surface exhibits irregular firing, producing a raw abruptness in contrast with the controlled surface of the other relief. The temporal dialogue between the two forms is reinforced, therefore.

 Physically, the work challenges conventional notions of completion while also existing irregularly as a floor-based double relief, opposing traditional standards.
